Conference & Workshop Announcements: (Arranged by date) Performing the World '08: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow - Announcement and Call for Proposals. The conveners of Performing the World, the conference/festival of the growing international performance movement, are excited to announce that the fifth Performing the World will be held in New York City from October 2-5, 2008. The event will showcase innovative practice and scholarship and provide a rich context for learning and performing together. A New Location, A New Kind of Conference. Performing the World '08 (PTW '08) builds on the momentum of 2007's PTW 4, which brought together 300 practitioners, scholars and community activists-educators, youth workers, researchers, psychologists and therapists, health and helping professionals, business people, artists and activists from 27 countries. PTW '08 is bringing the international performance movement to the streets of New York-and introducing the performance movement to the communities of New York City. For the first time, the All Stars Project, an organization recognized for its highly successful performance-based outside-of-school developmental programs for young people and its Castillo Theatre, joins the East Side Institute as a co-sponsor of the conference. PTW '08 will be based out of the All Stars' performance and development center on 42nd Street near Times Square, and will be hosted by young people from around the city. Workshops and performances will take place there and at theatres, schools and other venues throughout Manhattan and other boroughs. New Yorkers from virtually every neighborhood will open up their homes to out-of-towners, not only to save on hotel costs, but also to incorporate the diversity of family and neighborhood into the experience of the weekend and to build person-to-person ties between ordinary New Yorkers and performance activists and scholars from around the world. Instructions and forms for submitting proposals, due April 1, 2008, can be viewed and downloaded at www.performingtheworld.org . Proposals should be e-mailed to Lois Holzman at ptw@eastsideinstitute.org . The subject headline should be PTW Proposal. XIII ANNUAL COURSE OF SCHIZOPHRENIA - Madrid , October 9th -11th, 2008 - The Schizophrenia Courses are aimed at mental health care professionals . Due to the success of the course in past years , the 13th edition is again being organised by the Psychiatry Service I of the General University Hospital “Gregorio Marañón” of Madrid, with the institutional and financial support of the Foundation for the Investigation and Treatment of Schizophrenia and other Psychotic Disorders and institutional member of ISPS (International Society for Psychological Treatments of Schizophrenias and Other Psychoses) . Their objective is to facilitate the relationship and up-date the knowledge of all the professionals involved in and interested in understanding these patients better and helping them more. The success of a congress depends very much on the support from companies and organizations such as yours. At the same time it gives you an ideal opportunity to gain broad exposure and promote your products and services to a wide audience of an expected 800 professionals from the Psychiatric medicine field. For more information we invite you to read Exhibitors' Manual which you can download on the website www.cursoesquizofreniamadrid.com or contact the Technical Secretariat at sec.tecnica@cursoesquizofreniamadrid.com From Science to Practice and Back: Mechanisms of Change in Developmental Psychopathology - October 17th, 2008 Toronto, Ontario, Canada Hosted by: Community Health Systems Resource Group, Hospital for Sick Children Conference website: www.chsrgevents.ca Approximately half of all referrals to children's mental health agencies are for oppositional, aggressive and/or antisocial behaviours and most of these children are also comorbid for internalising problems as well (e.g. depression, anxiety). Without intervention, the stability of psychopathology across the lifespan has been well established. Identifying effective prevention and intervention programs for high-risk children has been a top priority for decades. Indeed, a great deal of progress has been made in identifying a handful of “evidence-based” treatments. These treatment programs have repeatedly shown reasonable effects in randomized controlled trials. Despite these promising results, however, there remains enormous variability in treatment outcomes, and effect sizes are generally moderate. In order to understand how treatments work and for whom they are most effective, a better understanding of the mechanisms of developmental psychopathology and the change processes responsible for successful interventions is critical. The research programs that will be highlighted in this conference have the collective goal of identifying the psychosocial and biological mechanisms that underpin the development of psychopathology and how changes in these mechanisms may lead to successful outcomes for youths and their families. Invite you to a Scientific Meeting on Friday, October 31, 2008 at 8:00 P.M. Therapeutic Challenges of Paranoid Dynamics -
Presenter: Nancy McWilliams, Ph.D. Clients with significant paranoid trends present unique challenges to therapists, problems that are insufficiently addressed in current professional writing. Despite a rich older clinical literature on paranoid dynamics, despite the evidence that individual personality factors account for the preponderance of variance in treatment outcome, and despite recent empirical work on attachment patterns and their implications for therapy, there has been little recent attention to paranoid states, in which attachment is associated with attack and humiliation. Dr. McWilliams will argue that individuals with central paranoid dynamics are found at all levels of psychological health and illness and are often misunderstood and inadequately treated, despite their capacities to benefit from therapy. This talk will elaborate on different presentations of paranoia and review the probable etiologies and therapeutic implications of paranoid conditions. NANCY MCWILLIAMS, Ph.D. teaches at Rutgers University's Graduate School of Applied & Professional Psychology. She is author of Psychoanalytic Diagnosis (1994 ) , Psychoanalytic Case Formulation (1999), and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (2004), and associate editor of the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (2006). She is currently president of Division 39 (Psychoanalysis) of the American Psychological Association, and on the editorial boards of Psychoanalytic Psychology and The Psychoanalytic Review. Presenter: Marion Oliner, Ph.D. This presentation is an autobiographical account of Dr. Marion Oliner's life in Europe as a German Jew during World War II. The struggle of having a German Jewish identity, the magnitude of losses suffered because of it, and the task of working through the trauma they represented offers the context for this deeply personal account. The prelude to war and Dr. Oliner's own experiences are offered through childhood memories of rising anti-Semitism and the increasing adult anxiety surrounding her. Dr. Oliner was still in Germany during Kristallnacht, but her losses began much earlier when she and her parents moved from their small town to a larger city for safety reasons. By the time she arrived in Switzerland in1943, she owned nothing but a briefcase, the clothes she was wearing and her own life. Dr. Oliner's wanderings lead her to become fluent in three languages and enabled her to enrich her understanding of psychoanalysis. MARION OLINER, Ph.D. trained in psychoanalysis at The New York Freudian Society. She is on the Faculty of The Metropolitan Institute for Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, The National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis and The New York Freudian Society. Dr. Oliner is a Training Analyst of The New York Freudian Society and NPAP. She is a member of The American Psychological Association and The International Psychoanalytical Association. Dr. Oliner has published articles discussing external reality, trauma, guilt, gender issues, Lacan, and other aspects of French Psychoanalysis. She is the author of Cultivating Freud's Garden in France . No registration or fee required. Refreshments served following the presentation. Meeting Will Be Held At: The Karen Horney Psychoanalytic Institute and Center, 329 East 62nd Street (1st & 2nd Avenues), 1st Floor Auditorium, New York, NY 10021.
